The newly complete Pediatric Unit sparks a new theme of optimism

Each young patient that entrusts Staten Island University Hospital has a unique situation, but now they can recuperate in an area the lets them forget they are in a medical facility. The hero-themed unit brings a new feeling of elation for the community’s children. Rooms are bright, stunning, and in lively colors. A large playroom with a colossal model of a fire truck draws your attention the moment you walk through the door. TVs and video games are abundant, and each patient room is topped off with a lit model of the Verrazano Bridge to crown each bed. A completely overhauled Pediatric Intensive Care Unit helps treat the most delicate of our youth, but maintains a dynamic surrounding. Outside each room hangs a portrait of a hero in the fields of science, history, literature and more. The heroes were selected by Island elementary school children and the rooms were dedicated to the memory of a loved one lost or to a contributing organization. Those organizations were also honored in the ribbon cutting ceremony.
